There's something so satisfying about a perfectly made patty melt,
and this retro version on sourdough hits every note. The combination of
caramelized onions, seasoned beef, Swiss cheese, and Thousand Island
dressing between buttery grilled sourdough is pure comfort food
perfection. It's the kind of sandwich that makes you understand why
diners have been serving patty melts for decades.
 Ingredients
For the Sautéed Onions:
3 large white onions
2 T butter
½ t salt
5 dashes Worcestershire sauce
For the Burger Patties:
3 lbs. ground beef
1 t salt
1 t pepper
1 t onion powder
1 t garlic powder
3 T butter
For the Sandwich:
1 stick butter
1 loaf sourdough bread
1 cup Thousand Island dressing
9 slices Swiss cheese
Directions
·
For the sautéed onions: slice onions and sauté
with butter in a saucepan on medium heat. Cook for 25 minutes stirring
occasionally. Add S&P, Worcestershire sauce toward end of cooking. Set
aside.
·
While onions are cooking,
prepare the patties. Mix beef and seasonings, forming into an oval shape
about the size of the bread. Heat butter in skillet and prepare to fry each
patty until nicely browned and cooked through. Drain on paper towels and keep
warm until ready to assemble.
·
To assemble: wipe out skillet with
paper towels but leave some butter and bits of meat behind. Spread butter on
each slice of bread and place buttered side down in skillet. On one side of
the bread place Swiss cheese on the slice place a generous amount of Thousand
Island dressing.
·
Place a beef patty and onions on
top of the dressing. Wait for the bread to toast before assembling the
sandwiches. Slice in half before serving.
